Hever Castle's new exhibition, Catherine & Anne: Queens, Rivals, Mothers launches on Wed 8 Feb. For centuries Catherine of Aragon & Anne Boleyn have been pitted against each other as love rivals with their differences celebrated. This exhibition will showcase their similarities.
It's #InternationalWomensDay & today we're remembering Anne Boleyn, our most prominent heroine. Anne was born in 1501 to Thomas Boleyn & Lady Elizabeth Howard & was educated in the Netherlands & France. Whilst Anne's life was short-lived her legacy lived on through her daughter.
Today marks the coronation of Elizabeth I in 1559, Anne Boleyn's only child that survived. Her reign is known as The Golden Age, a time that saw the birth of Shakespeare, the defeat of the Spanish Armada, and the emergence of England as a world power.
In Tudor times today would have been known as 'Plough Monday', the first Monday after 6th January. The day when things would return to normal and people would go back to work after the twelve days of Christmas - lucky them! #HeverCastle #PloughMonday
#OnThisDay in 1533 Elizabeth I was born. The only child of Anne & Henry to survive, she reigned for almost 45 years. Her reign is known as The Golden Age, a time that saw the birth of Shakespeare, the defeat of the Spanish Armada, & the emergence of England as a world power.
#OnThisDay in 1509 Henry VIII married Catherine of Aragon. All 5 of their children died except for their daughter Mary I. Unable to produce a male heir their marriage turned sour. Whilst still married to Catherine, Anne Boleyn fell pregnant with Henry's child.
