Soooo I finally decided to make a #MovieSonic sprite for Sonic Mania! I don't plan to make a mod out of it though. Please do not use this in any mods. Hope you like! #SonicManiaStyleSprites

It's imperative to ensure that your sprites adhere to the aesthetics of the game you wish to apply them to. Moreover, simply coating Mania sprites with a 16-bit palette is not enough--the actual shading and form will need to be redone to accommodate lower fidelity.
