Yeah, I think it has a lot to do with the characters being older + Mikasa having shorter hair, which causes some people to think they have tweaked her design too much. The fact is the design had already been tweaked between S2 and S3 in order to be closer to the source material.

All this "Mikasa looks manly" or "she looks way too buff" noise from her season 4 design is quite funny because she's a freaking soldier (an elite one) and, on top of that, she's an Ackerman.

Also, Isayama has always drawn her with a muscular physique.

That's a nice comparison. Their personalities do seem similar. Her design also reminds me a bit of Genie from Louie, the Rune Soldier. Just switch the big sword for a big gun lol.
