Mary Jackson (1921-2005) initially worked at NACA (later NASA) as a mathematician and human computer. After studying engineering she was the first Black female engineer at NASA. Her work included thrust, air flow, and drag forces to improve aerodynamics of planes.

Carolyn B. Parker (1917-1966) is the first known African-American woman who gained a postgraduate degree in physics.
During WW2 she worked on the Dayton project, the plutonium development and research arm of the Manhattan Project.

Katherine Johnson (1918-2020) was a mathematician and one of the first African-American women to work for NASA. She calculated trajectories, launch windows and emergency return paths for Project Mercury, the first human spaceflight project in the US.
