Children's Book Week Is Celebrating Its 100th Birthday. Jessie Wilcox Smith designed the first poster for the event in 1919. Smith began her study of art in Philadelphia in 1888. I dare say that she was an artist who also illustrated. @jackikellum #ChildrensBookWeek

Another great older mouse book by Kevin Henkes. Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. Henkes uses excellent gesture and movement to create dynamic characters in his mouse books. This is another Must Read. @jackikellum #ChildrensBookWeek

Kevin Henkes sort of went a different direction, but I believe that his mouse books like Chrysanthemum were his best! Chrysanthemum has a great message. The illustrations are wonderful. It is a Must Read! @jackikellum #ChildrensBookWeek

Jacki Kellum has painted for years. When studying art in graduate school, she painted expressionistically in oil, but when she began writing picture books, she began painting in watercolor. Her watercolors retain the energy and bravura of expressionism + bold color. @jackikellum
