Navajo sculptor Rick Nez interprets the 1864 forced removal of over 10,000 Navajo from their homeland, Dinetah, in "The Long Walk", a Utah alabaster sculpture from 2004 on view in our Native Artists gallery.

"Dark Presence" by John Seerey-Lester depicts a mountain gorilla in a misty forest atmosphere, which the the artist created by layering dozens of light acrylic washes to gradually build up color. On view in our Wildlife gallery.

In his painting "Navajo Code Talkers" artist Mike Larsen included 19th century Navajo warriors such as Cayatanita, Manuelito, and Barboncito alongside U. S. Marines from the 20th century.

Today we recognize National Navajo Code Talkers Day. Hundreds of Code Talkers served in the Pacific during World War II starting in 1941. They transmitted vital messages by phone and radio with a code they developed based on the Navajo language. Mike Larsen, “Navajo Code Talkers”
This painting by Frank McCarthy hangs in our Frontier Gallery with the title "Mountain Men". Our Collection Manager recently took this work down and removed the backing paper, revealing an inscription by the artist showing the true title of the painting to be "to the Rendezvous".
