I’ve shared his nativity scene paintings before and wanted to share these Holy Week paintings. 운보 김기창’s culturally relevant paintings always move me. He started painting them “during a time of agony suffered by Koreans because of the war.”

In the 1950s, a deaf Korean artist, Kim Ki Chang, reimagined Jesus’ life through a Korean cultural lens and painted these images (and more) of Jesus’ life set in a Korean Joseon dynasty context (“The Life of Christ” paintings).

#삼일절 On this day, I think of our resilience. I think of how resistance against oppression, protest for justice, and pursuit of freedom are part of my history and my blood.
