When I was an art history student, the paintings in the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia could not be reproduced in colour. Barnes himself banned colour reproductions. You only saw them in black ands white. What a shock when I finally saw Joi de Vivre in colour! #MatisseBirthday
Art lovers, every one of you is special. You’ve brought a lot of light into a dark world this year. Thank you, and a very Merry Christmas! With Gauguin! Dreaming of the snow in Tahiti! #ArtLovers #TheTops
It's Paul Klee's birthday. One of the strangest artists there has ever been. Up there with Bosch in the 'strange' league. Don't ask me what his work is about. I haven't a clue. But he was into theosopohy and the occult so he probably didn't know what it was about either. #Klee
Art lovers, you have to get the Sunday Times today. You can read me going all soppy about Gainsborough's pictures of his family at the National Portrait Gallery. And I mean soppy! #WaldyInTears
Good morning art lovers. It's William Blake's birthday! He was profoundly unbalanced, but sometimes that is exactly what was needed. Like this chilling image of that terrible mythological demon - Britanicus Brexitus. Oh wait... it's not a myth. #HappyBirthdayWilliamBlake #Farage
Art lovers, rejoice! It's the birthday of Peter Lely (1618-1680). When he was good, he was SO good. It didn't happen often enough to take him into the top league, but it did happen. #Lely #HappyBirthday
It's Chagall's birthday, as well as England v Sweden. So I had a word with his ghost. He asked me to pass on a message. He said: 'It's coming home!'
People often ask where I learnt to turn my back on the audience in my films. Right here of course! Happy Birthday - David Caspar Friedrich!
