The Threatened Swan, Jan Asselijn, c. 1650.

The swan defends its nest against a dog (on left). Later treated as an allegory of Johan de Witt’s defence of his country. De Witt was assassinated in 1672.

15 Nov 1661, a woman carves into a tree. It's probably the artist Gesina Ter Borch herself who scratches her motto "Virtue Makes Beauty" into the bark, with a reference to her sweetheart, Henrik Jordis.

She's left her gloves, fan & shawl nearby.

Ustad Mansur was the leading animal painter at the court of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir (reg.1605-27), who bestowed upon him the honorific Nadir al-Asr, ‘Wonder of the Age’.

As I've just been reading about Jansenism again (and for over 30 years), here's "Le Janssenisme foudroyé", 1653, celebrating Innocent X's 'Cum Occasione'.

Note the foregrounded female adherents being greeted by Calvin himself.
