A funny thing in 1977. A little movie called Star Wars was the rage, but Kenner - who had the toy rights - wasn't prepared (no one was) for the merchandising demand. So, a competitor, IDEAL, seemed to get there first.
I do think that every long running character carries with it some responsibility to be a steward of what made the character resonate for so long. That doesn't mean static (Old Luke can change from Young Luke) but in comic books there are lines you don't cross lightly.
