@eliot_small did another search and found a super useful example--this is just a plane over a pool mesh and it's rendering the depth buffer (which..... by itself doesn't look very water like, but you can use this as a mask)

@eliot_small sorry also the dotted line shows the values of the depth! it may be a little confusing but the water is basically a plane and its looking behind it and telling the shader how far to the next mesh! kind looks like this
