The essence of The Mummy is a person who had been tortured and cruelly put to death by being buried alive. We wanted to show the pain of that in his expression and the centuries of desecration to his flesh. Visual inspiration came from the mummies of Guanajuato & The Bog People

For Skullz, the scare zone in Studio Center/ Lower Lot, we tried something different...a scarezone of all stiltwalkers. Originally it had a different name (which shows my complete ignorance at the time to a certain book series). At the time, I hadn’t seen any of the films!

Finale (song “Iron Man”) we end the maze with Sabbath’s most famous song. We return the ruined remnants of the cathedral & get attacked by a stilt-walking Iron Man. His design was inspired by the album cover for “Never Say Die,” the last Sabbath album Ozzy did before the reunion.

The stilt walker at the Gates of Hell was inspired by the Ferryman that takes the dead across the river Styx, albeit with a Medusa twist! And from there...the maze and the interpretations of the circles of Hell/deadly sins got stranger...

We needed to come up with an overall host character that could take on different iterations as guests travel through the various circles of Hell. We landed on “The Showman” version of Alice inspired by his 1994 album “The Last Temptation” since the facade had a Carny theme.

Here’s a few more characters from “Toyz”...”Dolly Maully” “Ballerina Screamer” and one of my favorites of all time...”Bad Bunny!” It’s not so much the costume that makes this character scary as much as the thought...”Why is this guy wearing a bunny suit? WTF???”

Of course, La Llorona ruined my idea of having all the scarezone names in 2010 end in “z” but that wasn’t by design. La Llorona was a replacement zone that came in late in the project. The original zone we planned and never did was called “Killerz.” Here’s some concept art
