Another Wilderness spell card for MetaZoo: Jeering Rocks. Pretty straightforward in concept, having a large Earth-aura creature heckling a beastie of another type. Both the Stone Man and the Explosive Rabbit just seemed like the most natural cryptids to cast as bully and victim.
Transfiguration. Another Wilderness spell card that is a reissue of an earlier MetaZoo card.
Growth had been a card in previous MetaZoo sets, with imagery of newly-sprouting plants. I added a Jackalope to this Wilderness version, for variety and because it seemed like a good idea to add cryptids to any spell card that I could. I tried to make it as precious as possible😆
One environment card for MetaZoo: Wilderness. The desert card that Victor Larson did for the Cryptid Nation set looked to me like maybe the Mohave. The desert card I painted for Nightfall was the Sonoran. So for the Wilderness set I did a scene of the Painted Desert.
The Honey Island Swamp Monster is another character assignment for MetaZoo: Wilderness where I was like, "This one is mine. This one is for me." A kind of manic, feral swamp rapscallion who makes you feel you're gonna get an infection just by looking at them.
You can really see the purpose of the color mockup stage, here. I went through a lot of variations within the prescribed earth-aura color palette to find just the right combination of colors that would have the most appeal, and would emphasize that toxic, radioactive concept.
#PortfolioDay I'm JoJo, illustrator and comic artist! I work in different media, and love drawing big expressions, lots of motion, and punchy color!

I've finally found images of the finished cards for all the relevant pieces, so I'm going to start sharing the illustrations that I did for the MetaZoo: Wilderness trading card set! Yay!
The first piece that I did was the Ohio Grassman.
