Denis Wirth-Miller’s big retrospective @firstsite triggers the release of a fascinating Bacon revelation in today’s Observer by Dalya Alberge. Thank you @Zandra_Rhodes
Matthew Colling's brilliant portrayal of Francis Bacon going round every painting at 1977 PV of his close friend Denis Wirth-Miller & drunkenly laughing & gesticulating in front of them, mortifying Denis & causing Denis never to paint again: currently being re-enacted @firstsite
An opening for Denis Wirth-Miller retrospective: 'Landscapes and Beasts' thereafter the show will be open (free) until 22nd January 2023. Really hope a late summer/autumnal/early winter visit will appeal.....
Some more Agar also in current show at the Redfern : “Eileen Agar; Another Look” until 17/07
Just seen this very nice Jankel Adler from 1928 being sold in Berlin (€20-30k... ouch). Adler, introduced by the Two Roberts, became a great friend of Richard Chopping before settling in Wiltshire where he died in 1949.
I'm delighted to hear that a biography is underway of another extraordinary post-war life; James Pope-Hennessey - murdered at the age of 57 in 1974.
Portrait here by Lucian Freud.
I see that John Piper's 'Llyn-y-Gader' sold yesterday. Bringing back many happy childhood memories of climbing Cader Idris.
