Not really. There are other SEGA games that exist which don't go nearly as crazy as Sonic does with abstraction. If Sonic Team wanted to shoot for something more grounded, they very well could have.

Personally speaking, my favorite Sonic zones are ones that are more abstract in nature.

There's a lot to interpret in the way that zones convey their mood with shape language and colors and all that fancy stuff that make them inherently interesting to look at...
