Recording a podcast on The Glorious First of June next week, and I'm already looking forward to it ⚓️
It's that time again... Trafalgar Day! ⚓️
Today marks the 215th anniversary of this naval battle, in which the British fleet, under the command of Horatio Nelson (and later our boy Collingwood) beat the combined fleets of France & Spain, off Cape Trafalgar.
Thread.
Very interesting piece written by Tony Beales entitled ‘Great Expectations: the Approach of British Ships at the Battle of Trafalgar’.
Well worth a read and covers reasons for dissatisfaction in the fleet about the performance of some ships in the rear.
If you are also fed up with all the Valentines themed everything, everywhere... here's something more exciting for Feb 14th.
The Battle of Cape St. Vincent - 14th February 1797

Reading the memoirs of a naval officer who died in 1814. He writes brief lines on people he served with and within 2 mins I'd noticed a theme 😂
He either describes them using their love of grog, or describes how the grog killed them
Settle in... with grog if needed...
