I don't really have a big thesis here. I also wish general fantasy readers would notice these books more, but I think there's a lot of factors at play besides just the cover illustrations. Could you bear to put these on the inside of the book though? I mean.
I do wonder if a change to the composition would make them feel more "fantasy novel in translation" and less "is this a Japanese Manga-Comic?" Thinking of covers like these that say "fantasy novel inspired by xianxia/wuxia" (2 of these are YA but you get the point).
Illustrated covers aren't inherently for younger audiences. There are some absolutely beautiful illustrated covers on adult fantasy titles. Like these.
Just finished DAUGHTER OF THE MOON GODDESS, a very pretty and fable-like xianxia romance with oh my gosh this most gorgeous cover
Really enjoying @MarRogerson's VESPERTINE - this book is scratching a very particular SABRIEL/Lockwood & Co itch for spooky ghosts and sassy undead companions
Good things I watched in 2020 (I'm sorry this is an MXTX fan account now, I didn't mean to):
