You could use the same methods to create custom fluid simulations or 3D cellular automata purely using nodes
Here's a good example of why proximity for the density of the probe grid looks nice. As the mesh gets closer to a light source, the detail that can be displayed by the probs increases, giving a much more realistic effect.
