@JulBanks If you are keen on some in depth study a book I highly recommend is "Bird Anatomy for Artists" by Natalia Balo. It's really fantastic at breaking down the structure underneath.
I also found a good exercise for learning about simplifying feathers was to trace my own photos. :)
