Hearing Katie speak for the first time gave me a lot of clarity of how she might act and really helped with design. After I heard Abbi Jacobson's first recordings I drew these poses to her dialogue. This video was part of our Katie character design pitch to the studio.
Eventually we found one we liked! We sort of found the right actor, but continued to push her costuming/hair/details to make her a more iconic/compelling/specific character. @chrizmillr & @philiplord were super helpful in encouraging us to push her to an exciting place.
Early Katie Mitchell designs from around 2015, back when the project was called "Control Alt Escape". Most of the first designs of the family started in the poster formats. The storytelling posters were helpful when @michaelrianda was first pitching the project at the studio.
In celebration of #TheMitchellsVsTheMachines blu-ray release today....more behind the scenes!!!
Sharing my process of designing Katie Mitchell!

Have you guys met the Mitchells? #TheMitchellsVsTheMachines
Michael Rianda put a lot of himself into this movie! He led by example and set a culture that supported the team putting themselves into the movie too. It's a big part of what makes this movie so human and familiar! #MvMWatchParty
Tried to bring in my love for caricature, our crew, and specific characters in the crowd system. https://t.co/V7lTQVZ4cO
