The Souls of Acheron (1898) by Adolf Hirémy-Hirschl (Hungarian, 1860–1933). Österreichische Galerie Belvedere. Charon (far left) was the ferryman who transported souls across the Acheron to be judged.

Echo and Narcissus (1903) by John William Waterhouse (English, 1849–1917). Walker Art Gallery. Narcissus is unable to tear himself away from his handsome reflection and dies. Echo wastes away to a disembodied voice.

Passage of the Jews through the Red Sea (1891) by Ivan Aivazovsky (Russian, 1817–1900).

Tamara and Demon (1889) by Konstantin Makovsky (Russian, 1839-1915). Tamara and Demon was one of the illustrations to a poem by Mikhail Vrubel. The painting won the Grand Gold Medal at the Paris World Exhibition.

The Premature Burial (1854) by Antoine Wiertz (Belgian, 1806-1865). Wiertz Museum. The common means to determine death were usually rough and ready or absurd by today's standards. No wonder many feared a premature burial.

The Siren (1900) by John William Waterhouse (English, 1849-1917). Originally sirens were male or female, but the poor old male siren vanished from art around 5th century BC.

A Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach (1884-5) by Stanhope Alexander Forbes (1857–1947). Plymouth Art Gallery. The work was probably painted on the beach near the old medieval harbour of Newlyn in Cornwall.

The Crystal Ball (1902) by John William Waterhouse (England, 1849-1917). The painting has been restored to show the skull which had been covered up. So - a skull, a book of spells and a crystal ball.
