day 18 of #inktober is the Mica Cap, or Coprinellus micaceus!
the genus Coprinellus is made up of "inky cap" mushrooms, which dissolve into a black, gooey substance with age. this species is called the Mica Cap because of small crystal-like scales on its cap!
day 17 of #inktober is Russula olivacea!
many recognizable Russula mushrooms have red caps, but this species has an olive green to brown cap and a pinkish stem. this genus is one of the most common in North America and comprises over 750 species worldwide 🌿
day 15 of #inktober is the beautiful Trametes versicolor, or the Turkey Tail mushroom!
this species is a polypore that has striking, zonal coloring on its cap. it's one of the most common species in north america and can be used in medicines!
day 13 of #inktober is Suillus tridentinus, or the Orange Larch Bolete!
suillus mushrooms are often misidentified as their relatives, boletes, although they are still tasty edible mushrooms. this particular species tends to grow under larch trees up north 🌲
day 9 of #inktober is Marasmius rotula, or the pinwheel mushroom!
these tiny mushrooms grow directly on decaying woody material, especially that of beech trees. they're most known for their unique scalloped cap and widely spread gills!
day 7 of #inktober is Mycena inclinata, or the Clustered Bonnet!
this beautiful saprobic species likes to grow on stumps or branches, particularly those of oak trees. this painting is now available on my online store! ✨
day 3 of #inktober- Mycetinis scorodonius or the Garlic Mushroom!
these tiny mushrooms can be found on plant matter in hardwood and coniferous forests, and smell and taste just like garlic! they're edible and can be used as a garlic substitute in dishes 🍽️✨
day 2 of #inktober is the beautiful Brick Cap mushroom, or Hypholoma lateritium!
these guys are in season right now and can be found on wood in clusters 🌿 it’s related to the poisonous Sulfur Tuft, so it’s edibility is debatable although some people eat them anyway..!
