The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Cartoonist by Adrian Tomine is a perfect memoir. At first it deceptively presents itself as simply being a journal of Tomine's most "embarrassing gaffes" (which is entertaining enough), but it *builds* to a remarkable and emotional conclusion.
The new YA graphic novel Hollow does a great job of telling stories about ghosts and teen crushes... but the secret ingredient is that the book is chock full of parents and friends giving the heroes the *support* that they need.
Plus there's a corgi. That never hurts.
In her new mid-grade graphic novel Ride On, @FaithErinHicks delivers an intimate story while still keeping the emotional stakes engagingly high. If you know any young readers who haven't discovered Faith's consistently great books yet, be a hero and fix that for them.
In the new non-fiction graphic novel Pinball, @jon_chad manages to cover history, engineering, game design, and even a bit of business. Throughout it all, he delivers tons pinball art that could NOT have been easy to render but that he seems to have had a blast drawing anyway.
The Mars Challenge by @aliwilgus and @WyethYates does NOT skimp on the science... which makes it perfect for young readers. They like being challenged and they like building up their areas of expertise (which is an important part of fostering adolescent literacy.)
There's a lot to like about The Mitchells vs. The Machines, but the highlights are the production design and the character design. It turns out that both departments were headed by the SAME PERSON. @LindseyDraws is the real star of the film.
As a kid I learned to love comics by reading collections of old newspaper strips like Peanuts and Doonesbury. Diving into the collection of Nancy strips by Olivia Jaimes brought back that joyful sense of discovery. I love how she mixes traditional gags with wonderful meta-jokes.
One Year At Ellsmere hits all of the right notes for a mid-grade story about being the new kid at school. Beyond that, I really like the CLARITY that @FaithErinHicks brings to every page. I've seen too many books by other authors/artists that fumble because... (1/3)
I'm looking for some #GraphicNovel recommendations! Do you have any favorite graphic novels about history?
Congratulations to all of the Harvey Award winners... especially @geneluenyang, @Gurihiru, and @TheJaniceChiang for their work on Superman Smashes The Klan! https://t.co/i522epmKdt
