Here’s something similar, from @PhysicsWorld. The image of the supermassive black hole at the heart of M87, a simulation, and the simulation adjusted to reflect the resolution of the EHT — their guess for what we’d see!

Given the extreme weather headed towards Chicago I thought it might be fun to review the goofy, extremophile, very hypothetical aliens from the National Geographic Picture Atlas of Our Universe (a foundational text for nerds of a certain age).
Jocelyn Bell Burnell made the first observation of a pulsar #OTD in 1967. She and advisor Antony Hewish initially dubbed the object LGM-1 (“Little Green Men”) for its regular signal, but it was soon identified as a rotating, magnetized neutron star.

The physicist Lise Meitner was born #OTD in 1878. She discovered fission in uranium and was the first person to understand both its mechanics and implications.

This Blade Runner-esque photo of Toronto is by Lucan Coutts. It's getting a lot of shares without acknowledging him as the photographer. Here's his instagram:

Just ordered this great black hole print from @FabledCreative. But now I've got my eye on their wormhole poster.
