Winds and tides generate waves in our oceans. In space, giant black holes can pump energy out into their environment. This can creates ripples, or waves, in the hot gas that surrounds them, as in the Perseus galaxy cluster.

Space break!
This is M51, also known as the Whirlpool Galaxy. It's a spiral, like the Milky Way we live in. We can't get an image like this from our galaxy without a *really* long selfie stick so we study galaxies like M51 as a substitute.
