Beth was originally just an unnamed librarian who would appear in one (unfinished) comic.

I became really attached to the idea of a grumpy, sarcastic lady who looked like Susie so I promoted her to be Susie's big sister who is more responsible.

In PnD's earliest days, Dave was originally supposed to be the normal one while Pain was the crazy one.

I felt this was boring and just went full Sam & Max and made both of them the crazy one. Dave is just the crazier one.
