Take a look at, say, SRB2. They had to hand design a lot of environments and environmental assets, pick great color schemes that account for both looking nice as well as being clear enough for gameplay purposes.

It's visually appealing, fun to look at, and fun to play.

These are the Sonic OC business cards I made for the infamous video "Original Psycho, do not steal".

There are a lot of references and easter eggs in them. I'm particularly proud of the Homestuck/Sonic/MLP crossover one, even if some of the jokes in that one have aged poorly
