Ignoring my usual complaint about 3D Pokémon looking soulless, why do they desaturate the colors so much?

The sprites for shiny and regular Gengar actually look distinct in Gen 3, but on DS and 3D games they are barely noticeable & lighter.

I don't think that's a gender identity though (I don't know). I'm not really saying anything other than making observations. I have the personality of a girlfriend when in a relationship (and took on the role of, essentially, a housewife for my ex) & a non-punk Kanji.
