You'll know the selection is sealed if the selection lines are only on the outside of the colors. Once this is done, I invert the selection [5], and then fill [6]. You can also keep it simpler and fill inside the area too.

Still, I like to use the bucket tool too! However, to make sure I don't need to worry about gaps, I like to do an outline [3]. Once the colored area is fully sealed off, use the magic wand tool to select the area outside the colored area [4].

[1] Sometimes if the lines are incomplete or are messy, bucket tool can be kind of a handful to use, and often times find that there are gaps that need to be scouted out and cleaned up [2].
