'The Pink Heron', 1969, by Brett Whiteley. This was donated by the novelist, Patrick White, to the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1979. White was an art collector and author of one of the most extraordinary novels about a (fictional) painter, 'The Vivisector'.

I first saw this as the cover of my boyhood copy of Hesse’s Narziss and Goldmund, so it is always the abbey at Maulbronn for me. Casper David Friedrich’s Abbey Among Oak Trees from 1809, seen in person today.
