Sal does everything he can to escape life as the unwanted Marivaldi child. He goes on long travels "for the family's imports & exports business" (to be away from home in interesting places, exploring the arts and theatre as a bard). Sometimes he even manages a minor adventure.

When Kenrick Marivaldi, Sal's younger half-brother, was born, Sal became even more the un-favorite and was raised by the house servants and neglected by his parents except when he would come home after being in fights with other noble children.
