Meanwhile it was kicking off in Longford as Red Hugh O'Donnell, Maguire & Cormac MacBaron assaulted 'Her Majesty's Castle' in Longford. Constable & wife taken prisoner & an estimated 10,000 cattle taken 'so great a of cattle to feed themselves and their hired Scots a long time'

Aye. By this time hereditary traditional families living in Ireland made up the galloglass, seasonal troops from Scotland were Redshanks, also Gallogalss heavy armoured infantry whereas redshanks light sword/bow armed infantry.

'The number of Scots may be proportioned & mixed with English forces in Ulster, that all fear of inconvenience may be removed' in other words the English didn't trust the Scots. While Tyrone had some Scots (& McDonnell a close ally) he was not a fan due to their indiscipline.

Lambert's men slighted the Irish defences and marched for their camp before dark but the Irish came on again attacking their rear and fought them on open hard ground. 'Of both sides we burnt a great deal of powder; the rebels were no niggards [ungenerous/stingy] of their store'.

An odd twist of fate, Tyrone had benefited from James' tacit support during the war, as the king turned a blind eye to Irish imports of arms and munitions from Glasgow. Tyrone would not have been able to maintain the war without this key line of supply.

OTD 1600 Bishop of Cork reported while Tyrone was in Munster 'had taken a full view of the harbours of Cork & Kinsale'. Was it at this point Tyrone decided on plan to land Spanish at Kinsale? Year & a half later Carew had lifted all Tyrone's allies-Munster pacified

OTD 1595 While Tyrone's modernised forces were tearing up Crown armies in the north, traditional forces remained the norm in relatively peaceful Munster. Estimate put numbers at 1,360 galloglass remain in the province.

A key element of this was payment. Must be emphasised that Tyrone's rank & file soldiers did not fight for religion, ideology or compulsion owed by social obligation to the political elite. They fought because they were paid and if the money ran out the war would end v. quickly
