I asked my extremely talented niece @francescadare to produce a comic drawing of me as an archdeacon. I think she has captured what John of Salisbury, secretary to Archbishop Theobald of Canterbury, wrote in 1160: “for archdeacons, the whole way of salvation is utterly barred.”
