Colour. We have the ability to enhance things to look better than reality! 2D teaches this very well because you can't just read theory. It's much faster to see how one colour sits next to the context of other colours around it. Get familiar with them!
If you can paint, always do a paint over mid project. Helps you see a lot of details outside of the engine. & check your greyscale values (the brightest/highest contrast will be where the eye goes)
