The original release of Ys VI had a book with a fully illustrated prologue for the game in it, as well. If you've seen the (albeit horrible) opening from Konami's release, this actually came from the prologue story.

Oh, and there's a variety of characters who have gone through immense amounts of pain and emotional torture throughout the Kiseki/Trails series. But I guess that since these are JRPGs, they really don't count, do they?
