A trio of large synapsids, the Jonkeria truculenta, approach the river to drink some water. The amphibian Rhinesuhus whaitsi seems to be bothered by these thirsty dinocephalians, and opens its mouth wide to scare them.

Arthropods were simply enormous. Arthropleura, the giant millipede (up to ~2m long), crosses a fallen trunk. A 70cm scorpion, Pulmonoscorpius, cacthes the small lizard-like Westlothiana. The 1.5m eurypterid Hibbertopterus clumsily crawls onto dry land.

Here, during the Viséan age, Lower Carboniferous, swamps covered the territory that would become Scotland. They were home of unusual giants: arthropods and arborescent lycophytes grew to extraordinary sizes.

I might use the word "giant" a lot in this thread!

The Crato Wetlands - A revised paleoenvironment!

A recently published paper by Alexandre Ribeiro and colleagues present a new hypothesis for the environment of the Crato Formation, and I had the pleasure to produce this image illustrating the results!
