Contrary to previous morphological studies, which suggested turtles as early reptiles or as sister to lepidosaurs (lizards and snakes), we found turtles to be the sister lineage to archosaurs (crocodiles and birds),as long suggested by molecular/genomic data (4/n)
We tackle here: the origin of turtles; rates of evolution and selection mode in early amniotes+reptiles; the long-term effects of #climatechange on the evolution of reptiles; and as asked by the @EonsShow,“Why Triassic Animals Were Just the Weirdest?”(2/n)(art H. Sharpe)
😃Really excited to share that we got on the cover of @Nature again!!😃 (with @gabirelasobral et al.)
Thanks to your amazing artwork, Jorge Blanco!

We just published in Communications Biology @SpringerNature @nresearchnews the oldest fossil lizard in South America, pushing back squamate arrival in SA by 20Myr, and showing cosmopolitanism of early squamates in South America! #lizards #herpetology https://t.co/BoKlE0oZaa
