Yamamura wanted the characters to actually look like people who practice Japanese archery so Kadowaki made the hair shorter (Nanao) or tucked the hair behind an ear (Masaki) since it'd get in the way while shooting. Also, Kadowaki is a fan of hair that is tucked behind an ear.
