The feel for including these scenes of nature is very reminiscent to Sanpei Shirato's work, primarily Kamui Den and Watari. Historically speaking even, nature and naturalism of this variety were popular in Kanō School depictions and artwork, which were tied to literature.

The animation quality in the first 5 minutes is bouncy, jovial, and experimental all the more to communicate an otherwise horrific occurrence, gotta love it.

Another great thing about this film is the, of course, historical accuracy. Crucifixion was a common way to be punished for high treason or other crimes in the Edo era. A popular, well documented execution site has to be the Suzugamori grounds used by the Tokugawa Shogunate.

The color palette in Dagger of Kamui is interestingly grounded as well similarly to what I had mentioned in Ninja Scroll; it grounds the 'world' we are witnessing in a way that is relatable and feels at home with the Earth.

Just classic Rintaro goodness, this shot is so interesting to me!

Today's film screening will be The Dagger of Kamui (1985), one of my favorite Madhouse joints with Rintaro at the helm. I can't wait to watch this in 4k finally!
