This high temperature anomaly in #Antarctica is quite something. 30C above the long term average!
Anyone happen to know if this is a record for the region?
For the next 10 days or so we’ve got a little heat anomaly thing going on in the central #Arctic and the #Antarctic has its own thing going on as well.
This abnormally warm area of #Antarctica has persisted now for some time and comes at a time we are seeing way below normal Antarctic sea ice levels. (Graph courtesy of @ZLabe).
But #DontLookUp
When a disturbed and dislocated #PolarVortex is parked right over you as it is for #Siberia, you get extraordinarily cold temperatures! 🥶
Big omega high pressure over #Siberia is continuing the extreme warmth there. This week’s environmental disaster of diesel being spilled may have been caused by permafrost thawing from the month’s long excessive warmth. Permafrost is thawing at a high rate in the region.
We are seeing signs #Arctic-wide for a potentially record setting summer melt season. I’ll be curious to see the May PIOMASS sea ice volume numbers, but I think the DMI dailies are giving us hints of a big decline. The Arctic heat wave has been brutal. https://t.co/3OmkhOzecY
