I gave my WoL new hair, and thought it makes them look like an overprotective older sibling
(haven't met Alisaie yet!)
...and that's it! This was done about a year ago so there are certainly parts I'd do differently now. But this is my thought process for tackling complex projects like this. Hope you enjoyed :)
After color adjustments and polish. The blood needed more attention. It is both the compositional and the thematic focus of the illustration. Blood forms the line that connects you (the hunter), the hunters that came before you, and the moon, its source. or something like that.
made men by the blood.
The painting is almost complete, but there are small adjustments to be made still. When I am working on the final steps, I think about what the focal point of this illustration is and highlight that. Not everything can be equally important.
geez, the first pass of colors was very dark. It took a bit of fiddling and re-painting to get it to the second image. If I painted this again I'd probably go with a different approach to the colors.
I was referencing the color of the sky after you beat Rom.
When I have a reasonable amount of detail/rendering it's time to add color. Normally I'd do a color thumbnail sometime before this. This time I skipped doing one, because I was lazy. This does come around to bite in the ass. You learn to figure it out though.
Painting is a bit mindless. I already did the part that uses my brain, deciding where the characters go and what they look like, for the most part. I flesh them out, make them have volume. Make sure the lighting is consistent.
