While I personally prefer this scene more in manga. The flashbacks in the anime say more than what a 1000 words cant. Gintoki is having a ptsd episode. Beaten by Utsuro again like when he was a child, those beloved memories of his teacher are tarnished. He lost his will to go on.

Found some misinformation about this 2013 Gintama poll, in a shipping wiki. There’s even an edit to make it seem like it’s real. The lengths some people would go, to make a ship seem canon. Originally it was to have someone feature on a WSJ cover alongside Gintoki—
