76 years ago tonight at 21:28 hrs the first wave of a/c of Op CHASTISE from RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire was launched. Last year on the 75th anniversary, I listened to the sound of birdsong, the last peaceful sound many souls heard that night.
‘Lie in the dark and listen’ ✈️
Joan Hughes MBE, qualified as a pilot aged 17, flying instructor for the Air Transport Auxiliary aged 21. She was one of the first ATA pilots to fly multi engined heavy bombers along with Lettice Curtis. Joan was so small she put newspaper inside her shoes to pass her medical.
One of the wonderful ladies in the WAAF/WRAF/RAF(W) celebrates her 95th Birthday today! Happy Birthday Bessie Thomas ✈️😍xx
