Just reading about the sad passing of Leiji Matsumoto - creator of a bewitching web of interconnected space operas I've just scratched the surface of, and an iconic character aesthetic that's inspired animators all over the world

Wolfgang Reitherman - also co-directed Sleeping Beauty and Dalmatians, but this is his best mostly-solo run (with an assist from John Lounsberry on Pooh)

- The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

Hamilton Luske, Wilfred Jackson and Clyde Geronimi - Classic Disney gets quite complicated with a lot of co-directors for each film, but this team gave us:

- Cinderella
- Alice In Wonderland
- Peter Pan
- Lady and the Tramp

Honestly, that might be all the unimpeachable contenders? For some wild cards:

Mamoru Hosoda - suffers from having his weakest film (Boy) in the middle of his run. Without that it's a perfect run of 5

- Summer Wars
- Wolf Children
- Boy & The Beast

Hayao Miyazaki - honestly it's basically impossible to pick a single run of four, but this one probably averages out the best for me

- Kiki's Delivery Service
- Porco Rosso
- Princess Mononoke
- Spirited Away

Isao Takahata - again, you could easily start the run earlier and swap out Grave of the Fireflies for Princess Kaguya (but I prefer the latter)

Best bit of trivia that didn’t make it in:

Disney got the rights to Oswald back from Universal by trading him for a real human man, ABC (turned NBC) sports pundit Al Michaels
