The Acasta River Gneiss (Gray Stripy Marble on the Left) was discovered in the Northwest Territories of Canada and is the oldest intact piece of crustal rock on Earth. It is about 3.5 to 4 billion years old. (For perspective the Earth is 4.5 billion years old.)

Nickel & Iron: The nickel is represented by a green Garnierite egg & the iron is represented by a marble with a banded iron formation pattern on it. (The center of our planet is made up of iron & nickel, & that creates the magnetic field that protects us.)

This red triangle is an arsenic crystal. Recent discoveries in the world of extremophiles suggests that early life might have been able to flourish in oxygen starved conditions where arsenic was readily available.

At the center we’ve got fire. Fire from the sun & fire at the molten center of the earth. The blue crystals are the element of water. The green portion is the sea floor, one of the places early life developed…

I made this art from photographs I took at the the Tijuana Estuary in San Diego. I love my visits there and I am very thankful for their work of conservation. We need more places like that! @TijuanaEstuary
