“Died” is not a character trait. That can’t be her whole deal. We’d already had these better versions, that this movie was clearly cribbing from. But they couldn’t pull out of the tired old “girlfriend” cliche toolbox.

After making her actually compelling in Ultimate SM, they kill her for that same reason. Because they were in effect “retelling” Spider-man. But Bendis like immediately regretted it, said screw it, and brings her back. No longer beholden to history.
