October 22nd, 1878: The actor Edwin Booth, now acknowledged as the finest leading actor on the American stage, performed Richard III at the Broad Street Theatre in Philadelphia. He used the six-act version of the text, based on his own adaptation of the Colley Cibber version.

March 31, 1932: The ballet "Caballos de vapor" by Mexican composer Carlos Chávez was given its world premiere at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, billed as "H.P." for 'horse power', conducted by Leopold Stokowski. The sets & costumes were by the Mexican artist Diego Rivera.
