day 19-the ocean (just like everything else on earth) is full of microbes.Within the ocean they find their sweet spot & thrive but some like to move around. The deeper unclear regions hold many unknowns which we are able to study with new technology.

day 15- bath salts often enhance the experience of being suspended in water. Bacteria also respond to salts present in the environment. Some swell up, grow fast or dart around. Each has a preference for type and concentration of salt in the medium.

Day 11-small periodic lines on the wall made during childhood are indicators of growth. For bacteria this is done by protein complexes (density, bound or unbound, location). When these proteins misbehave we see long cells lacking division points

⚽️ is back and so is "the wave". A synchronised up and down arm movement is also something bacteria do within colonies but with ions. Cells pump out potassium which when visualised over time give the illusion of a wave travelling from the center outwards of a colony!

The skeleton alone is not enough, we need a combination of muscle and bones especially to better understand movement. Understanding the chemosensory arrays in bacteria require a similar combination of cryo-TEM imaging and protein structure fitting!

A great talk by Arden Perkins on a unifying sensing mechanism for CZB protein domains at . The benefits of a multi-faceted approach in understanding how zinc binding domains in chemoreceptors sense oxidants.

CHEF à la bacteria!Microbes are one of the most hardworking chefs out there. Thanks to them we have kimchi, idli, kombucha, yoghurt, tempeh and much more. These are made using enzymes produced by bacteria that modify complex compounds giving flavor & texture.#inktober2020
