@ChaldeaM When Gil admits defeat against Shirou, it isn't because Shirou bested him in combat. It's because Shirou forced him to take him seriously, something he swore he would never do. Even if he would've killed Shirou, it would still be a defeat in his eyes.
@Starboy___10 Archer's. He does get some sort of "shortcut" powerup thanks to getting his arm. Gotta wait for the finale to see it in action though. Trust me, it's worth it.
@Starboy___10 Couldn't have said it better myself. I might do a thread about the Fate/SN pairings later on but I think the classic GCs from the VN speak clearly about the nature of each relationship.
@Starboy___10 Goated couple. I'd love for Nasu to revisit the UBW timeline and shows us more of their future together.
This isn't to say that the other two routes aren't great because they are and certainly do other stuff better than UBW. This is just to highlight how this route is able to do "so much with so little" in such a compelling way.
UBW is probably the route that does the most for Shirou as a character. For him to have his ideal, the only thing he's passionate about, rejected and shattered by his own ideal self and still be able to find his own answer in the end is both peak Fate and peak Shirou.
The beauty of UBW being the middle route is that Shirou's journey leads him to find proper balance with the help of Archer and Rin, whereas the Fate and HF outcomes are more like opposite extremes between idealism (longing for Saber) and realism (Protecting Sakura at all costs).
UBW is the reason I fell in love with Fate/SN. The whole Shirou/Archer dichotomy was the moment I stopped thinking of the VN as something "fun" or "really good" and realized I was reading something special. It also transformed my perception of Shirou as a character on the whole.
