Hat Tutorial 6-
José Carioca wears a straw hat known as a Boater. It’s considered a semi-formal hat for outdoor events. A Boater has a stiff crown and brim featuring a patterned ribbon. José’s black ribbon and Brazilian style often misidentifies his hat as a Panama.
No matter what licensed comics I’ve worked on nothing ever got as many hits as this. 11 years later I still see the bootleg t-shirts available on FB.

Hat Tutorial 5-
Captain Hook wears an off-center, wide brimmed, short crowned hat popular in the 15-18th centuries. It could be shaped in to a bicorn, tricorn or cavalier style. Excellent for shading eyes on the high seas. The ostrich plume is a symbol of his status as captain.
Hat Tutorial 4-
The Deerstalker is a tweed outdoorsman’s cap. Basil of Baker Street’s hat is modeled on the type made famous by Basil Rathbone’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes.
Although a proper English Gentleman would never wear hunting gear to traipse around London.
Hat Tutorial 3-
Scrooge McDuck wears a silk top hat to befit his station as the richest duck in the world. Not collapsable like an Opera hat or made of wool like a Coachman’s hat, the topper is acceptable for both day or nighttime formal wear and adventuring.
Hat Tutorial 2
The Bycocket was a hat worn in Europe from the 13-15th centuries. Initially worn by nobles and later by more common folk, the wide brim was folded up in back and formed a point in front for shade. It was usually adorned with feathers or jewelry.
Let’s learn how to draw proper cartoon hats. We’ll start with one of the ones I have experience in. Darkwing Duck wears an exaggerated wide brimmed fedora (or slouch hat.) The hat should look like it actually fits on the head so width of the crown should be as wide as the head.
